Almonds

More about almonds...
All around the Mediterranean, almond trees bloom with pink flowers in spring. They belong to the same genus as apricots and cherries. Ground almonds have been used to make a kind of ‘milk’ since classical times. We have Arabian cuisine to thank for the process of turning almonds into marzipan and other confections. Almonds, with the exception of bitter almond, have a sweetish, delicately nutty flavour. The classic blanc-manger was once also served with poultry, fish or rice.Bitter almonds contain hydrogen cyanide. Small amounts are used to flavour creams and baked goods.

Vanilla

More about vanilla...
The vanilla pod is the fruit of an orchid. It grows as a parasite on trees in tropical forests. The pods, which are 15 cm long and a greenish yellow colour, become dark brown and release their flavour after curing. Vanilla has a sweet scent; the pods release their flavour when boiled. .
